FOREIGN Secretary Boris Johnson has heeded calls to condemn Iran’s detention of the wife of a Farnham man, and offered to visit her in prison.

Charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, wife of Farnham’s Richard Ratcliffe, has been held in Tehran since her arrest by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in April 2016.

Following criticism for refusing to act, Mr Johnson has finally attacked both Nazanin’s conviction for spying as a mockery of justice and her treatment by the Iranian authorities.

Speaking to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, he said: “Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, nor her family, has been informed about what crime she has actually committed. And that I find extraordinary, incredible.”

Asked if he would make the trip to visit the dual British-Iranian national, he replied “of course”, adding there were “obvious humanitarian grounds” for Nazanin’s release.

However, the Foreign Secretary was forced to apologise after alleging, incorrectly, that Nazanin was “simply teaching people journalism”, which some have speculated could worsen her sentence.

The Herald recently reported that Nazanin, who is already serving a five-year jail term, is now facing fresh charges and could face an additional 16 years of imprisonment if convicted.

This led UN human rights experts to express “grave” concerns for her welfare, calling on the Iranian authorities to release her at once.

Nazanin was arrested by Iran’s Revolutionary guard in April 2016 as she tried to return home to London with her 21-month-old daughter Gabriella after a two-week holiday. She has been confined in a high-security Iranian jail ever since while her daughter, now three, remains at the Tehran home of Nazanin’s parents.
