YOUNG geologists caused quite a fizz at South Farnham Junior School this week as year three pupils took part in a Rocks and Soils workshop.
Having sorted soils into their correct groups, followed by rocks into their appropriate families, the children had the opportunity to look at some specimens under powerful microscopes.
Their task was to discover the properties of various rocks, such as granite and slate, in the hope of finding those that were made up of crystals.
The children even took part in some investigations that tested rocks and soils for permeability.
However, the most exciting experiment was ‘Bubbling Rock’, whereby they dropped vinegar onto chalk to test for calcium carbonate – and were thrilled by the resulting chemical reaction.
