GRAYSHOTT War Memorial has been given a new lease of life recently, after villagers organised an extensive £1,240 cleaning programme. The work was organised by Grayshott Parish Council, and jointly sponsored by Grayshott Pottery's Trust fund and the Grayshott Royal British Legion. Clive Slaughter, chairman of Grayshott Parish Council, said: "For some time the parish council has been hoping to restore the memorial, dedicated to the great people lost in two world wars. "We are so fortunate in having the generous donations from the Grayshott Pottery Trust Fund and the Royal British Legion, which allowed this super work to be done at last." Grayshott Pottery donated £940 from its community fund so that the renovation work could begin. The additional £300 was raised by the Royal British Legion, and the work then organised by the parish council. Phil Bates, chairman and trustee of Grayshott Pottery, said: "It gives us all great pleasure to see such a worthy site restored again. "It is so important that we remember all the great folk who gave up their lives for peace in this country. The Pottery is delighted to be able to help." Gwyn Jones, branch secretary of the Royal British Legion, said: "It is a wonderful gesture by all involved to put the war memorial back this way. "The memorial stone is so soft and absorbent, and it is this that causes it problems over time."
