JUST days before Farnham celebrated its first ever RHS Britain in Bloom gold award, the town’s youngest gardeners spent some of their half-term holiday helping plant hyacinth bulbs at the latest Bloomin’ Kids free gardening workshop.

The hyacinth tubs will be sold as gifts at the Farnham in Bloom winter celebration with proceeds going towards next year’s workshops. During the workshop, run by Farnham Town Council, children also planted peas, beans and shallots which they took home to nurture and enjoy.

Stephen Hill, the town council’s lead member for Farnham in Bloom said: “As ever, it is a joy to see so many children taking part in Farnham in Bloom.

“We’ve already started to prepare for 2018, and so we are grateful to the children for making a very enthusiastic start at the workshops.”

Two sessions were needed to accommodate all the children at the town council’s greenhouses in West Street. As well as planting, the children, some as young as four, took part in gardening themed craft activities and a mini beast hunt which was held for the RHSing Week.

A grant, which was secured last year from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, enabled the town council to run the sessions for free. As well as being enormous fun, the workshops have great educational value. Children learnt about some of the science behind gardening as well as skills they can use at home.
