Sir, – The lane markings at the junction of Water Lane with the roundabout leading on to the Shepherd and Flock have recently been changed. Historically most Farnham residents used the left hand of the two lanes to go towards Guildford, and the right hand lane to turn right onto the A325 towards Farnborough or turn left onto the Shepherd and Flock going south towards Winchester.

Now the marking indicate the left hand lane is for the A31 towards Guildford and Winchester, and the right hand lane should only be used for the A325 towards Farnborough.

I am trying to obey the road markings but have had angry drivers who want to turn left towards Guildford beeping me because I am holding them up while waiting for space to move towards the Shepherd and Flock roundabout. Also, because many people are still using the right hand lane, they are effectively cutting across me as I try to move forward.

I’ve emailed the Highways department and they acknowl- edge that the junction is not ideal. There is space for three lanes (which would be the best solution), but this would apparently cost £50,000, which is money they just don’t have. How it can cost this much to repaint the markings and move a bit of kerb defeats me; it seems excessive but that is the world of contracting! The only other thing they can do is put up signs alerting people to the changes – this should happen soon.

If everyone obeyed the new road markings it would make the situation safer for everyone. I also assume that, if there were to be an accident and two cars collided, the one in the incorrect lane would be at fault ... which may make people think!
