FARNHAM Maltings will launch a new artist-led creative group for anyone over 65 this autumn to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the UN International Day of Older Persons.

Meet Me at the Maltings will connect local people, bridging interests and building confidence among those experiencing loneliness or isolation.

The weekly, short term group is for people who may be recovering from an illness, bereavement or whose friends have moved away from the area. Whatever the reason, they are invited to leave it at the door and take part in a range of engaging and meaningful activities with likeminded people, or just read the paper or listen to music and soak up the atmosphere within the company of others.

Running every Thursday from October 1 to December 17, there will also be a hot lunch at midday and refreshments available throughout the day.

Monthly topics in the group’s first season cover Craft, Words and Warmth, with all sessions delivered by professionals in their field.

Every week there is an hour of singing led by Ciara Burrows, an experienced singing leader of all ages including work with Southbank Centre’s Voicelab, Surrey Arts and the Junior Royal Academy of Music.

There will also be fortnightly pottery sessions with the Maltings’ resident potter Penny Eccles.

As Farnham celebrates Craft Month in October, the Maltings will work with craft artists Barbara Touati-Evans - an expert in crochet, model making and origami, and Julie Munslow-Webster who creates 3D art for wearing or displaying. There’s also the chance to learn how to use craft apps on an iPad.

November heralds a month of words, poetry and playwriting for theatre, internet and radio. Resident theatre company, Pursued by a Bear will develop scenes inspired by experiences. A gentle introduction to writing for performance, no previous experience necessary.

And finally, December will be a time to hunker down and celebrate food, warmth and the art of conversation. Centred around meals, family reminiscence and conversation, the group will decorate with cake chef Coral Duran, share baking memories and reflect on how things have changed. There will also be the chance to make edible gifts and Christmas cake decorations.

Meet Me at the Maltings will take place between 10.30am and 2.30pm weekly, costing £75 for October’s five sessions, £60 for November’s four sessions or £45 for December’s three sessions. All 12 sessions booked together at the same time cost £150.

Book tickets online at www.farnhammaltings.com or by calling the Maltings’ box office on 01252 745444.

It is looking for people who are able to commit from 10am to 3pm on Thursdays from October 1 to December 17, although some degree of flexibility is possible. Training will be provided.
