FARNHAM residents have once again come up trumps in their support for the victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.

Following the recent collection by the Rotary Club of Farnham Weyside of almost £1,000 for the stricken Caribbean Island, a second appeal has led to further success.

The collection came after members of the club agreed to fund a £590 ShelterBox on the proviso that the funds could be raised through public donations.

All the proceeds from the collection, which was held outside The Bush Hotel, have gone towards sending a ShelterBox containing emergency supplies to those worst affected by the strongest Atlantic hurricane since 2007.

The boxes provide life-sustaining equipment to support communities that have been struck by natural disasters, and are sent quickly and effectively to the sites.

They include family tents, thermal blankets and ground sheets, cooking equipment and a stove. Rather vitally for those in Haiti, it also includes water containers and purification materials with the outbreak of cholera as a result of storm surges from the hurricane on the edge of an epidemic.

Peter Duffy from the Farnham Weyside Rotary Club said: “All this has depended ultimately on the generosity of the people of Farnham, which has never failed. As a result a ShelterBox is being sent to Haiti.”
