Kevin Ford's three-year spell as manager ended in success last Friday when Badshot Lea delivered a solid performance to clinch the Premier Challenge Cup against the division three champions, Guildford Railway Old Boys.
Having already defeated Staines Lammas, Merrow and Tongham in previous rounds and secured the league title in midweek, Railway arrived at Godalming full of confidence.
However, from the first whistle it was Badshot Lea who were stronger and more determined and they soon settled into their familiar passing game, using the wide pitch to their advantage.
The best chance of the half fell to Andy Zoldan, but his left-foot shot hit the outside of the post and went wide.
In the second half, Railway, roared on by a large contingent in the bumper crowd, came into the game, but could never find a way through Badshot Lea's solid and impressive back line.
The vital breakthrough came on the hour and it was fitting that the goal should be scored by Terry Payne who was outstanding in the middle of the park.
Gavin Scott's corner was flicked on by Derek Traylen and Payne rose to head home.
'Lea should have put the game beyond doubt, but squandered several chances as the game ended in a flurry of incidents, some of which incensed the Railway following.
A fine performance from Badshot Lea to bring down the curtain on another season. They last won this trophy in 1988.
