Petersfield gave a far more confident performance against a committed Millbrook team in the top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.

The forwards were dynamic, giving the visiting pack a stiff examination and letting the talented 'Field backs run free.

There was a definite shape to the forward effort and the back five looked comfortable. Jamie Williams relished his freer role and supported and tackled superbly.

Anthony Lintern opened the scoring with a penalty and then the tries started to come. Excellent work from James Martin, who had made the long journey back from Durham to play, put Bim MacKay in for a converted try.

Petersfield then began to run everything, aided by the admirable refereeing of Rick Woods.

Neil Arnold showed his pace to collect a kick-ahead and put Richard Alderman in for his first try.

A smart drive from lock Charlie Mason and George Rees followed, Martin quickly recycling the ball for Arnold to score.

Petersfield piled the pressure on and, picking up a knock-on, spun it out to Andy Crook. Alderman arrived on a super line of running to beat three men to the line.

Three minutes to half-time and 'Field came again, fast ball putting Lintern into space, Alderman taking it on and eschewing his hat-trick to put skipper Derek Eldridge in for the fifth try of the half, making it 32-0.

Coach Mike O'Shea made his changes at the half and this may have unsettled the team's rhythm, for although Arnold scored again (Lintern converting) a strong and determined Millbrook pack got back into the match and the visitors scored a deserved try.

Petersfield had an indifferent spell until Martin rejuvenated the backs, the ball passing through four pairs of hands for Eldridge to score in the corner.

Petersfield came out with a useful 44-5 win and their campaign seems to be back on the rails.

Petersfield III 110, Portsmouth IV 0. The scoring was fast and furious in this local derby at Penns Place, with Petersfield dominating from start to finish and piling up a century of points.

'Field stated their intentions from the first whistle, with the forwards setting up good ball for the backs to attack at every opportunity.

Matt Rodgers opened the scoring and fellow Aussie Andy Smee joined in for two tries in quick succession. Portsmouth had no answer as more tries followed from Richard Grimes and Larry Wood (2).

Rodgers went in for his second, stripping the ball from a bemused defender on the halfway line and roaring away to score under the posts.

Wayne Butcher scored from an excellent breakaway and Mick Fitzpatrick added a try and six conversions.

Portsmouth, to their credit, raised their game in the second half, but could not cross the home line.

'Field again took control, Butcher claiming his second try. Rodgers and Smee both ran in their hat-tricks and Colin Campbell scored two twice.

Smee added his fourth, before skipper Simon Hawkins crashed over to take the score into three figures and tries from Bevan and Ian Chubb rounded off this record day for the thirds.

Petersfield Vets 36, Tottonians Vets 19. 'Field struggled in the tight and loose against a big, robust Tottonian pack, but when they did win ball, they looked very good.

The speed of Stubbington and Marion gave Petersfield the edge and Derek White scored two tries from the wing. Guy Dawes added a fine try and Andy Stubbington scored after a great break from newcomer Ingalls to end the game.

There was some good play from the sprightly John Ray and Bill Glancy, now in his 22nd season of playing vets and 4th XV rugby for Petersfield.
