Yellow and blue were the colours on Monday as Waverley Borough Council (WBC) marked Ukrainian Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony.

The borough’s deputy mayor, Cllr Penny Rivers, said the council continues to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and reaffirmed its support for those affected by conflict.

She joined WBC deputy leader, Liz Townsend BEM, Rev Chris Lion of Godalming Minster, council staff and members of the public for the ceremony at The Burys.

The event in Godalming commemorated 35 years since Ukraine's Declaration of Independence was signed in 1991. It also provided an opportunity to recognise the resilience, courage and determination of the Ukrainian people and their armed forces.

Attendees reflected on the significance of the occasion and Ukraine's ongoing journey as an independent nation.

Cll Rivers said: “We come together to mark Ukrainian Independence Day and to recognise an important milestone, 35 years since Ukraine declared its independence.

“This occasion gives us an opportunity to reflect on the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people, who continue to show remarkable courage in the face of immense challenges.

“By raising the Ukrainian flag at The Burys, we stand in solidarity with Ukraine and reaffirm our support for all those affected by conflict.

She added: “We are proud to mark this important day and to celebrate the values of freedom, democracy and self-determination."

The annual observance provides an opportunity to acknowledge Ukraine's independence, culture and heritage, while recognising the strength and perseverance of its people.

Waverley has taken in roughly 3.6 Ukrainian guests per 1,000 residents – one of the highest percentages in Surrey – since the conflict began more than four years ago.
