THE long-awaited zebra crossing outside Shottermill Infant School should be completed in time for the start of the autumn term.

Following a request by school governors for a zebra crossing (pictured) to make it safer for children and parents crossing Lion Lane to get to both the Infant and Junior schools, former county councillor Nikki Barton secured funding last year for the £35,000 project.

Everything except the Belisha beacon lights was finished by Surrey County Council Highways in March and it was supposed to be up and running in the next few weeks – but the switch-on failed to materialise.

A county council spokesman told The Herald on Monday: “The delay in installing lights was due to a change in contracts and the work will now now be completed in the next few weeks.”

Meanwhile, Surrey highways has made good on its promise to improve road safety both for pedestrians and motorists at the entrance to the new Haslemere railway station car park.

Workmen have installed a mini-island to separate the traffic flow in and out of the station in Lower Street.
