Thursley Village Hall looked fantastic on Saturday, April 7, all set up for the annual Thursley Horticultural Society spring show. The daffodils, hyacinths and camellias filled the hall with vibrant colour and scent.
The flower and vegetable judge, Peter Cooper, congratulated the whole society, in particular Terry and Nicky Cornell, on their very impressive daffodil entries. Nicky and Terry were awarded the Haviland Daffodil Bowl for the most points in the daffodil section and they won the Marshall-Hall Plate for the most points in Section 1, which included tulips, other spring flowers and pot plants.
Pat Clake was awarded the Spring Cup for a display of nine stems of mixed spring flowers and the Miniature Cup for three beautiful miniature multi-headed daffodils. Despite the wet, cold and blowy weather, there were a lot of daffodils on display.
The cookery section attracted local cooks. Entries, including carrot cakes, apple and cinnamon scones, and lemon meringue pies, both looked and tasted delicious.
Mary Royall’s tasty lentil salad won the Judge’s Choice for cookery from judge Diane Terry. Oonagh Tanner’s carrot cake was an impressive winner.
Nicki Bates won the Daubeny Cup for the Best Floral Art exhibit with a beautiful arrangement of spring flowers in a basket entitled ‘Flowers for Easter’. Oonagh Tanner’s entry ‘Out and About’ with driftwood was also impressive.
Many children entered the show this year, and obviously particularly enjoyed making Easter cards and decorating the little Easter cakes they had made themselves. They filled numerous little jars with spring flowers, which looked delightful. Freddie Thorpe was recognised as having the best children’s exhibit because of the disarming chick he had painted on his Easter card.
Thursley Horticultural Society’s next events are the plant sale on May 5, a visit to Claire Browne at Plant Passion Nursery, East Clandon, on June 6, and the summer show on July 14. New members and visitors welcome. Contact [email protected].
