GOSTREY Meadow will be transported back in time on Saturday with a fete to mark the 70th anniversary of the official end of the Second World War.

The family-friendly event has been organised by the Farnham branch of the Royal British Legion to commemorate Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, which brought an end to six years of bitter fighting.

It will take place from noon to 4pm, promising music from the 1940s including a Glen Miller tribute band, swing dancing, and vintage stalls.

Children will be able to enjoy a merry-go-round, bouncy castles and face painting, while adults make the most of a beer tent, food and drink stalls.

Visitors are encouraged to come dressed in 1940s costume and a hair stylist specialising in 1940s hair-dos will be on hand to complete the wartime look.

Ian Hunter, secretary of the Royal British Legion’s Farnham branch, said: “A lot of people don’t know what VJ Day is because history lessons seem to stop at VE Day, but as the Allies celebrated victory over Nazi Germany, thousands of British soldiers were still fighting in the Far East.

“VJ Day is hugely significant as it marks the actual finish of hostilities in the Second World War. Millions of people died in the 1939-45 conflict and all those who didn’t come home should be remembered on the anniversary of the day the war ended.”

The party will continue into Saturday evening when the Royal British Legion hosts a night of 1940s-era music and optional fancy dress at the Liberal Club in South Street.

Everyone is welcome to join the period fun, which starts at 7.30pm and continues until closing time.
