Waverley Borough Council has confirmed parking will remain free at three council-owned car parks despite the recent installation of parking machines.

Machines have been installed at Beacon Hill Car Park in Hindhead, Farnham Park Car Park and Library Car Park in Bramley as part of new time-limited parking arrangements.

The council stressed the machines do not signal the introduction of parking charges. Instead, motorists will be required to obtain a free parking session from the machines during controlled hours.

The new arrangements are intended to improve the availability of spaces by discouraging long-stay parking and encouraging greater turnover. The council said this would help ensure spaces are available for residents, visitors, shoppers and people using local services and attractions.

Season ticket permits will also be available for eligible local residents and business staff, although these will carry a modest charge. Details of eligibility, costs and how to apply will be published before the new arrangements come into force.

The council has yet to confirm when the parking controls will begin. It said the date would be announced before enforcement starts, with further information issued in advance and clear signage provided at each car park.

No penalty charge notices will be issued until the scheme has formally come into operation.

Cllr Tony Fairclough, WBC Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Regulatory Services, said: "We've installed the new parking machines to help make sure that parking spaces are available for the people who need them most.

"We recognise the importance of these car parks to local communities and businesses, and we'll be providing further information about permit arrangements and implementation dates before the new controls come into operation.

“We also understand that residents may have questions following the installation of the new machines and we thank everyone for their patience while the changes are being implemented."
